If your router/modem is set to the default wireless security encryption setting of WEP, then your wireless internet connection could be comprimised by a third party. WEP encryption can now be 'hacked' in minutes, leaving your personal information and data vulnerable to theft. If this happens (worse case scenario) your on-line banking information could be stolen, emails could be read. Even more concerning is that once your internet connection has been 'hacked' the hacker could take part in other illegal internet activity which could then be traced back to your internet connection. "How can I find out what security level my wireless internet connection is?" Easy, just look at your wireless internet connection. The most Common Windows XP wireless connection can be seen in this example. As you can see from the above example the Wireless Networks that have (WPA/WPA2) are secure. The Wireless Network (in this case) WLAN_40 has security enabled but is WEP, which can be hacked. There are several different types of Wireless connections, another XP example can be seen here. A Vista example can be seen here and here. "How do I change my wireless security?" You need to log into your router/modem and change the security setting to WPA or WPA2 with a key/pass phrase with as many characters (combination of letters, numbers and simbols) as possible, the maximum number of characters is 64. Try and use words that are not in the dictionary, this will help to give you maximum protection. (PLEASE NOTE1). "How do I log into my router?" WARNING!!! Changing the wrong settings in your router could disable your internet connection! UPDATING PLEASE CHECK DAILY. |
